WSU IN BEAVER STATE FOR THE WEEK
The Washington State women’s soccer team hits the road for a pair of WCC contests in Oregon, beginning Wednesday, October 22, in Corvallis against Oregon State. Kickoff at Paul Lorenz Field is scheduled for 6 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.
COUGARS AND BEAVERS HISTORY
WSU and OSU have met regularly throughout history as conference opponents, dating back to a 1991 inaugural match, finishing in a 2-2 tie at Oregon State. Since then, the Cougs have enjoyed the advantage with an all-time 20-10-4 record against the Beavs. WSU has identical 10-5-2 record at home and in Corvallis, and are unbeaten against OSU in seven matches dating back to 2018. Head Coach Todd Shulenberger has only lost to the Beavers once with an all-time 8-1-1 record against the Orange and Black.
LAST TIME ON THE PITCH
The Cougars tied Gonzaga, 1-1, Saturday night at Lower Soccer Field to remain unbeaten at home all-time against the Bulldogs. In the 28th all-time meeting between the programs, WSU freshman Keira Mitchell scored the first-half, go-ahead goal for the Cougars before Gonzaga battled back with a late equalizer in the 83rd minute.
ABOUT OREGON STATE
The Beavers are led by head coach Caroline Kelly in her second season at the helm of the OSU program. Senior goalkeeper Mya Sanchez earned preseason WCC recognition. WSU will see a familiar face across the pitch, when former WSU student-athlete Natalie Lewis takes the pitch for OSU after transferring in the offseason. The Beavers hold a single conference win against San Diego with a selection of four players with two goals each.
YOUNG TURNS HEADS
WSU senior transfer Jordyn Young has caught the eye of the WCC, as the Cougars’ leading goal scorer with four goals after just one goal in three seasons at Cal. The Martinez, California native has started every match for the Cougs with three of her goals coming since the start of WCC play.
SHACKELFORD SHINES
Sophomore transfer Audrey Shackelford has found her footing as one of Wazzu’s go-to service strikers. Shackelford recently tallied her third assist of the year, delivering a perfect, in-swinging ball from a corner kick in the Oct. 18 draw with Gonzaga.
