Tottenham move to spoil Euro giants’ as Chelsea star rises to top of summer shortlist

Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea, January 2022

Tottenham have reportedly registered their interest in Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech, which would see Paris Saint-Germain’s pursuit hindered yet again.

Ziyech’s Blues career has never really got off the ground. In 102 games for the London outfit, the Moroccan has been directly involved in 25 goals.

He would have expected to have done more, given how important he was at Ajax. New players joining the club in the last couple of windows have meant he’s slipped down the pecking order.

This season, he’s started in the league just six times. He was close to a move to PSG in the January window as a result of his lack of games, though Chelsea’s blunder in not sending the corrects documents on time meant he had to stay put.

Of late, reports have suggested the Ligue 1 side are yet again interested in making Ziyech a PSG player. That report suggested if a bid of £20-30million came in, Chelsea would have no problems in letting him go.

PSG might have their party spoiled again, though. Indeed, a report from AS Roma Live suggests Tottenham have ‘launched signals of appreciation’ for the forward.

The main reason for that seems to be uncertainty over Dejan Kulusevski. The report states he has ‘not convinced’ this season. As such, Ziyech could find himself battling for a starting spot at one of Chelsea’s main rivals.

The report also states, contrary to previous suggestions, the Blues would sanction a deal for just £18million.

That sort of sum would obviously be much more favourable for any side looking to buy Ziyech. However, it seems fair to question whether he’d be an upgrade on Kulusevski.

The Swede is 22, while Ziyech is 30, and he’s already been directly involved in 21 goals during a little over a full season in the Premier League.

Ziyech is yet to reach that figure, having had a full season and a half extra on the Spurs man. So while Kulusevski might have not convinced this season, it’s hard to see where Ziyech has convinced the north London outfit enough to register an interest at all.

Perhaps if he was to join he’d be able to show up close what he can bring to the side. However, it might not be worth replacing Kulusevski for him in an outlay of around £20million when he could come good again next season.
