Pundit insists Man Utd should have appointed ‘very intelligent’ Southgate over Ten Hag

Danny Murphy says he would have picked England boss Gareth Southgate over Erik ten Hag for the Manchester United job.

Ten Hag replaced Ralf Rangnick in the dugout when his interim spell in charge concluded at the end of the season.

He has been given the huge responsibility of turning the Red Devils’ fortunes around after a dismal campaign.

The Dutch manager joins with a great reputation after winning three Eredivisie titles with Ajax. He also guided them to the Champions League semi-finals three years ago.

Southgate, on the other hand, has received lots of praise in recent years for his work as England manager. The Three Lions reached the final of Euro 2020 last summer and were also World Cup semi-finalists in 2018.

Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy is a big fan and has heaped praise on Southgate’s development into a “very intelligent football manager”.

When asked who he would have picked for the Manchester United job between Southgate and assistant Steve Holland, or Ten Hag, Murphy replied (via talkSPORT): “Gareth and Steve.”

He went on to explain: “I know them. I think they’ve come a long way, the pair of them, and have a great partnership.

“What they’ve achieved with England, managing big players. Gareth has evolved into a very intelligent football manager.

“With Steve by his side, they would do a great job at a big club.

“What United need now isn’t all about on the pitch. They will be judged on that, but initially what do United need?
