Frenkie de Jong has revealed his desire to stay at Barcelona, rather than link up with his former manager Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The Holland international midfielder starred under Ten Hag at Ajax between 2016 and 2019 and is said to be available for around £65million if Barca can replace the 25-year-old with a major name.

De Jong made 47 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions this season, scoring four times from midfield.

However, the midfielder has revealed to ESPN his desire to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place in the squad – despite the Catalan giants looking to offload him.

The latest development is a huge blow to United’s plans to rebuild their current squad to suit the style of play that incoming boss Ten Hag demands.

‘I prefer to stay with Barcelona,’ De Jong told ESPN. ‘Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age. I just said it too.

‘I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.’
