Rapids’ Record Unbeaten Run Snapped by Nashville SC

DICK'S Sporting Goods Park to Host U.S. Women's National Team Friendly with Colombia on June 25

May 29, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Colorado Rapids News Release

The Colorado Rapids fell to Nashville SC 3-1 on Saturday night at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park snapping the Rapids’ 23-game regular season unbeaten run at home. Striker Diego Rubio earned the Burgundy Boys’ lone goal of the evening after his bending free kick outside of the box found the back of the net in the 77th minute.

“It was just disappointing because we feel like we’ve seen some tremendous performances over the last couple of weeks,” head coach Robin Fraser postgame. “And as I said to the team, you can’t have a good game, bad game, good game because you just don’t go anywhere in the table. So consistency is really the word and the thought for us going forward.”

Colorado’s home streak comes to a close with the result, but will remain on the MLS all-time leader boards, ranking T-4th in the regular season.

Nashville, making their first-ever visit to Colorado, got on the board early and with intensity, as they scored all three of their goals in the first 17 minutes of the game. CJ Sapong jumped on a bouncing ball in the six to put it over the line in the 8th minute, and Hany Mukhtar earned himself a brace after goals scored in the 15th and 17th minutes.

The Rapids were unable to find their footing in the remainder of the first half but took their opportunity to strike from directly outside of the box in the 77th minute when Max drew a foul from Nashville’s Dave Romney.

Rubio’s ensuing free kick bent its way to the near post and into the net past Elliot Panicco for the Rapids’ sole goal on the night. The strike marked his 7th of the 2022 season placing him in third place in the MLS Golden Boot race.

After Colorado was on the board, the attack was reinvigorated and the Rapids put four more shots on goal, but the Boys in Gold kept the home side to just one.
