Billy Gilmour targeted by Rangers as two potential Ibrox exits loom

Chelsea are ready to send Billy Gilmour out on loan again and Rangers are eyeing up a swoop for the Scotland star, TEAMtalk understands.

The 20-year-old is still in the early stages of his career but has already shown exciting promise. Following his Premier League debut under Frank Lampard in August 2019, he has gone from strength to strength.

But amid the wealth of options for Chelsea in midfield, current boss Thomas Tuchel sent Gilmour out on loan to Norwich last summer.

The midfielder will return having made over 25 appearances for the Canaries this summer. However, TEAMtalk has learned that Chelsea do not think he is ready to step up to the first team just yet.

Instead, they are looking at another loan spell for the youngster and Rangers have emerged as an option.

The Gers have enjoyed a fantastic season, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst guiding the club to the Europa League final in his first half-season in charge.

Nevertheless, he anticipates losing some of his squad including midfielder Glen Kamara and winger Ryan Kent.

Rangers are therefore plotting a move to bring Gilmour back to the club and the deal is likely to appeal to the player.

Indeed, Gilmour was a youth player at Ibrox but left for Chelsea in the summer of 2017.

A move north of the border again would give him the chance to make his mark as Van Bronckhorst looks to reshape his squad.

Rangers have already recruited from the Premier League loan market this season. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has made 10 appearances since moving to Ibrox in January.

Gilmour’s breakthrough season in 2019/20 also saw him impress in his first Premier League start in a 4-0 win over Everton in March 2020.

Before that, he formed the bedrock of the Blues’ FA Cup win over league champions-elect Liverpool.

In 2020/21, Lampard gave Gilmour his Champions League debut but he only played a bit-part role throughout the campaign.
