Newcastle are ‘talking’ to Lyon playmaker Paqueta over a potential summer transfer

Newcastle United are reportedly ‘talking’ to Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta ahead of a potential summer transfer.

This is according to the former Magpies and Lyon defender Oliver Bernard, who has likened the playmaker to winter signing Bruno Guimaraes.

Paqueta has been linked with the Premier League club ever since they were taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in October.

Arsenal are also rumoured to be interested with the Londoners’ technical director Edu reportedly ‘leading the charge’ to bring the 24-year-old to the Emirates.

Speaking to Newcastle Fans TV (via the Chronicle), the Magpies’ former player Bernard says ‘he knows Newcastle are talking’ to Paqueta’s representatives.

“I’ve got a really good feeling about Paqueta,” the Frenchman said. “He could be on his way. Once you get one, you get them all. To be honest, it’s a snowball for me. I’d love that, and I know they’re talking so it looks good.

“He’s Bruno, probably with 10 goals a season. He’s an old-fashioned number 10 that has got bags of technique and awareness, he’s ridiculous. I wouldn’t say he works hard, but he’s always in the pockets. You’ve got to watch him, he’s always between lines and he makes the link between midfielders and forwards.

“He’s a perfect number 10 and a left footer, so he is something I would love to see at the club. If we get him, we will definitely be in the top eight [next season].”

Meanwhile, Ally McCoist has claimed that Newcastle would be a “great move” for Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.

The England midfielder is out of contract in June so he will move elsewhere this summer. McCoist is of the belief that the midfielder would be a good fit for the Geordies.
