EPL: Klopp Backs Everton to Stay Up After Merseyside Derby Win

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes rivals Everton can stay up in the Premier League despite the Reds beating them 2-0 on Sunday.

Second-half headers from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi clinched the three points for Liverpool, who stay within one point of leaders Manchester City.

The defeat, however, leaves the Toffees in the drop zone, after Burnley had risen out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton earlier on Sunday.

“Everton did what they had to do. We deserved the three points,” Klopp told reporters. “With a performance like this I think they can get the points they need.”

Everton boss Frank Lampard was frustrated after two Anthony Gordon penalty shouts were turned down.

“I think they both could have been penalties but you often don’t get them at Anfield,” he said.

“The fact there’s contact and he gets booked is crazy. The second one was a foul (anywhere else) on the pitch. Sometimes you don’t get them here.”

The relegation battle remains wide open, with Leeds United in 16th on 33 points from 32 games, with a game against Crystal Palace on Monday.

Burnley are up to 17th on 31 points from 33 games, with Everton in 18th on 29 points from 32 games.

“I’m proud and happy with the performance,” Lampard said. We have to take that spirit forward to the final games. We’ll give everything until the end.”

Elsewhere, Chelsea moved closer to clinching a top-four spot after beating West Ham United thanks to Christian Pulisic’s late winner after Jorginho missed a penalty.

Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton drew 2-2 after two James Ward-Prowse special strikes, while Burnley’s win over Wolves came courtesy of Matej Vydra’s 62nd minute strike.

Burnley interim manager Mike Jackson said: “Getting these results, I think psychologically for the group, what they’ve achieved this week will help them, will bring them together even more.”
