Erik Ten Hag sets sights on familiar midfield cog; Man Utd initiate talks with England man

Erik ten Hag wants to be reunited with Frenkie de Jong at Manchester United, while they have already started talks on a deal for an England midfielder and Barcelona will not make a move for one Arsenal star, all in the papers.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is one of Manchester United’s “transfer priorities” this summer, according to a report in Spain.

Incoming boss Erik ten Hag is looking to revamp his Old Trafford squad. And he is keen on his old Ajax player De Jong. The pair were together in Holland and they won the Eredivisie title and KNVB Cup together.

Now Diario Sport claims the pair could be reunited with Ten Hag looking for replacements for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

De Jong will not be easy to lure from the Camp Nou though.

In February links with United emerged.

“I’m very happy I’m at Barcelona: from a young age I’ve wanted to be here, so in that way it has been a dream come true,” De Jong said in an interview with the Guardian.

De Jong’s father also cited the “bad weather” in Manchester as another reason why his son may not be so keen to jump to United.

Barca for their part want to keep the midfielder. And Xavi is keen to mould his team around the talented 24-year-old.

 

But economic pressures Barca could see United make a tempting offer for the Holland international.

UNITED MAKE START ON PHILLIPS DEAL

Manchester United are understood to have opened dialogue with Kalvin Phillips’ agent, according to the Manchester Evening News.

It appears that United and their new boss Erik ten Hag have moved on from Declan Rice. It’s thought the West Ham midfielder is too expensive, despite turning down a third contract offer with the Hammers.

And now Leeds and England star Phillips is on United’s radar. With the report claiming “United are already working on a deal”.
