Neville singles out one Man Utd star he was 'proud' of in Liverpool loss

Gary Neville has singled out Hannibal Mejbri as the only Man Utd player to come out of their 4-0 defeat to Liverpool with any credit.

The Reds were rampant at Anfield on Tuesday night with Ralf Rangnick’s men lucky to go into the interval at just 2-0 down.

After the break Man Utd upped their performance slightly but second-half goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah took the game away from the Red Devils.

Hannibal entered the game late on in his first Premier League appearance of the season and he got booked minutes after coming on for a strong challenge on Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

And Neville thinks Hannibal showed more tenacity in the short time he was on the pitch than any of his team-mates did in the rest of the match.

“That is why I aired on to the slightly unprofessional side of commentary tonight,” Neville said on Sky Sports after the defeat. “When I said that the kid [Mejbri] to be fair I was proud of him because he was going round trying to top people and trying to kick people.

“But he demonstrated something, he showed something. He didn’t like the idea of Liverpool, at Anfield, passing it around him and the idea of Liverpool taking the mick out of him and his team-mates.

“At least he demonstrated something. I am not saying it is brilliant because he could have hurt the Liverpool players, but as a Manchester United fan you can respond to that.”

Neville’s fellow pundits were extremely critical of Man Utd with former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness insisting that no Man Utd players gets in the Liverpool team.

Souness said: “Under pressure Manchester United just couldn’t keep the ball. If you come to Anfield and want to have any chance of getting a result you have to be able to keep the ball and they just couldn’t do that.
