UCL: Tuchel 'Super Disappointed' By Disallowed Alonso Goal as Chelsea Comeback Denied

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says he was “super disappointed” about Marcos Alonso’s disallowed goal as his side bowed out of the UEFA Champions League despite a valiant 3-2 win at Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The Blues took a 3-0 lead, after losing the first leg in London 3-1, with goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner but it could have been more with Marcos Alonso’s effort ruled out for handball by the VAR.

Real would hit back with goals from Rodrygo which forced extra-time before Karim Benzema’s decisive 96th minute strike.

The German manager lamented the decision on Alonso’s goal by referee Szymon Marciniak who left the final call to the VAR.

“I did not see the goal but I told the referee I was super disappointed he did not check it on his own,” Tuchel told reporters.

“In a match like this where you have a certain line to whistle, you should stay the boss, and not give any decisions like this to somebody in a chair who is isolated from the atmosphere and the referees certain style.

“He should stay in charge and check on his own, then he could explain it better. It’s just my opinion.”

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti said he never felt his side were beaten despite the 3-0 deficit.

“At no stage did I think that it was over, particularly because we were playing here at the Bernabeu,” he said. “It’s difficult to put it into words, but this magic spurs you on.”

Elsewhere, Villarreal stunned German champions Bayern Munich to ensure two Spanish clubs progressed to the semi-finals, with Samuel Chukwueze’s 88th minute equaliser clinching a 1-1 away draw for a 2-1 aggregate victory.
