Nigel Pearson calls out individual performances in Bristol City assessment

Nigel Pearson was left fuming as his side suffered a humbling 3-1 defeat at the hands of Blackpool.

Goals from CJ Hamilton, Gary Madine and Josh Bowler secured all three points for the Tangerines. An 86th minute consolation goal from Nahki Wells bettered the scoreline, however offered no real rewards for Pearson’s side. And the Bristol City boss was left questioning whether his current group of players could handle the pressures of the Championship.

Speaking to Brsitol Live, Pearson said: “I suppose in some ways it’s whether players can deal with the pressures of being first-team performers and that’s going to be something which we may have to put up with in the short term because that’s where we are at the moment.

“Unfortunately we have players who keep making the same mistakes. Ultimately, if players aren’t able to find that sort of solution then it’s about changing players.

“What is a frustration for us is that individuals… their range of potential performances are too big at the moment. So it goes from excellent one week to not very good the next.

“We don’t have enough seven out of 10s in our team at the moment and that’s something that is. Whatever the reasons for it, that needs to improve for us to make progress over a longer term.

“Individual performances within the team don’t hit the same levels often enough. That’s something that we need to better at to make progress. But ultimately the three goals that we conceded were very poor goals.”

Pearson believes Blackpool goals could be avoided

Pearson was also adamant his side could’ve avoided all three goals against Neil Critchley’s side.

“The first two goals were avoidable as we had opportunities to clear,” he added.

“The first goal we had two opportunities to clear and we haven’t done so and the second one is not staying with our markers.

“And the third is a poor goal to giveaway. We’ve talked about that exact situation in the build-up to the game so…
