UAlbany Athletes of the Week

April 5

Female – Dee Denis, Women’s Track & Field

Hometown: Hartford, Conn.

In her second meet of the outdoor season, the UConn Dogfight, Denis won the 100m hurdles in 14.30 and placed second in the 400m hurdles in 1:00.74.  Both times were career personal bests for Denis, whose 18 points led the way for the Great Danes to finish third as a team against a collection of the top programs in the Northeast.  Both marks also satisfy the qualifying standard for the 2022 ECAC Outdoor Championships.
Male – Jack VanValkenburgh, Men’s Lacrosse

Hometown: Syracuse, N.Y.

Filling in for injured starter Tommy Heller, VanValkenburgh made his first career start in goal for the Great Danes in the road trip to UMass Lowell.  In a tight contest against the River Hawks, VanValkenburgh recorded his first career victory while making 15 saves.  With UMass Lowell surging late with a chance to tie the game, VanValkenburgh and the UAlbany defense turned away four shots from the River Hawks to clinch the Great Danes’ first road victory of the season.

Hometown: Rush, N.Y.

Freshman midfielder Courtney Rowe put forth a breakout performance in women’s lacrosse’s game against #22 UConn.  Rowe, who had scored one goal through the season’s first six games, notched four goals against the Huskies to lead the team.  She followed up her performance against UConn with two more goals in the America East opener against Binghamton, bringing her total for the week to six.
