Squeaky Bum Time - 'Patient' Man Utd Edge Omonia, Arsenal Win

Sir Alex Ferguson’s great Manchester United sides made a habit of late winners and that’s what Erik ten Hag’s team managed with Scott McTominay’s 93rd-minute strike in Thursday’s win.

United edged Cypriot outfit Omonio Nicosia 1-0 in the Europa League thanks to McTominay’s last-gasp goal, having dominated proceedings throughout as expectations and frustration grew at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils had 34 shots, 13 on target, with 78 percent possession and 13 corners, yet the only goal came very late.

Part of that story was the performance of Omonia goalkeeper Francis Uzoho who made numerous saves.

But United held their nerve to get the win, with ten Hag’s substitutions helping find a way through.

“They (kept the faith) and that’s why they scored,” ten Hag said.

“I have to compliment the team. We kept patient, kept getting in the right positions, kept creating chances and we didn’t allow the opponent to come out, so I think they did well. The performance was well done.”

The victory keeps United in the hunt to progress to the last 16 in top spot, sitting second in Group E with nine points from four games, behind leaders Real Sociedad who have a perfect record with 12 points after downing Sheriff 3-0.

Elsewhere in the Europa League, Arsenal maintained their 100 percent record with a 1-0 triumph in Norway over Bodo/Glimt after Bakayo Saka’s early goal.

Real Betis and AS Roma drew 1-1, while PSV Eindhoven thrashed Zurich 5-0 and 10-man Lazio drew 2-2 with Sturm Graz.
