Maryland Hosts Penn State at Ludwig

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The University of Maryland women’s soccer team will welcome Penn State to Ludwig Field for their lone contest of the week. The match will be streamed on B1G+. Kickoff is set for 1 pm.  

 THIS WEEK’S STORYLINES

series history

  • Marylands has a 4-14-0 all-time record with Penn State. The two teams met in State College last season as the Nittany Lions came away with a 5-1 win. 
  • The Terps are looking for their first win against the Nittany Lions since 2004.

Looking back to last week

  • Maryland fell in a back-and-forth contest to Wisconsin by a score of 2-1. Alina Stahl put the Terps on the board first with a goal in the 10th minute of the match.  
  • The Terps dropped a Sunday contest with Michigan State, 4-0.

B1g time matchups  

  • Maryland has battled head to head with some of the top teams in the nation, facing four different ranked opponents this season.  
  • The Terps have surrendered just five goals in those four contests, drawing #17 Georgetown 1-1, and falling in one-goal games to #24 Wake Forest, #4 Rutgers, and #23 Wisconsin.  
  • After dropping two contests last week, this week marks the first week of the season that Penn State is not ranked. The Nittany Lions have been ranked as high as #6 in the country.

New Terps making an impact

  • Amanda Schafer, Christa Waterman and Sydney Urban have all played a significant role on the team’s defensive line. 
  • Alina Stahl continues to lead the Maryland offense with four goals and two assists on the season. Stahl’s most recent goal came against #23 Wisconsin.    
  • Seven of the 11 goals scored so far this season have been scored by Maryland newcomers.

a new era

  • Coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer continues her first season at the helm of the Maryland women’s soccer program. Coach Nemzer comes to Maryland after spending the previous 14 seasons on the coaching staff at Rutgers. 
  • Katie Ely and Alex Ng will also be joining the Maryland staff this season. Ely has spent the previous seven seasons on the women’s soccer staff at the University of Georgia, while Ng comes to Maryland after spending the past two seasons on the University of Richmond women’s soccer staff.
