The Mexican national team fell 3-2 to Colombia at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Tuesday, as goals from Wílmar Barrios and Luis Sinisterra overshadowed El Tri’s dominant first half performance.
Chivas de Guadalajara figure Alexis Vega opened up the scoring in the seventh minute of the match, finding the back of the net from the penalty spot after a foul by Luis Diaz on Uriel Antuna inside the box. Mexico then followed up with another brace, as Gerardo Arteaga connected with Erick Gutierrez to double the tally.
But despite the early lead, Mexico could not withstand Colombia’s pressure. It all came to an abrupt end within the first 10 minutes of the second half, as Sinisterra scored back to back goals.
Alexis Vega reflected on the defeat, maintaining that Mexico played well against a very competitive opponent, “a good game was played against a high-ranking team.”
“I think we had been working in the best way, we overwhelmed Colombia and I think the first few minutes were forceful and then we entered very relaxed, a good game was played against a high-ranking team that doesn’t forgive you and it’s the details that you have to take care of,” he said to TUDN after the match.
“[We are] very happy, united, someone can stay out there, but the team is still good, we already talked about it and whoever doesn’t get it will support it in the best way.”
Tuesday’s match concluded the last international window before the World Cup, however, the team is slated to face Iran and Sweden prior to reaching Qatar. But Mexico must prepare as they are set to face Argentina, Saudi Arabia and Poland in the World Cup’s Group C.
