Bruno Fernandes says Man Utd arm-waving a ‘complete lie’ as he cites Maguire example

Bruno Fernandes gesticulates as usual in Manchester United colours

Bruno Fernandes insists he has never waved his arms in frustration at his Manchester United teammates.

The United playmaker, like compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, has been criticised by fans and the media for so openly showing his irritation in games.

Fernandes has frequently been seen gesturing with his arms and shouting in response to conceding goals or over other points of frustration.

But he told The Athletic that all of our eyes have deceived us; it’s “completely a lie”.

“The thing people say about how I wave my arms at my team-mates. That has never happened. That is completely a lie,” he said.

“I can be using my arms to ask for the ball and to tell them something about where to move the ball. But never do I talk to them in a bad way.

“Yes, I can shout at someone if they do not pass the ball when he has to do it, or if he does not take the decision in the best way, or if he goes two-v-one and does not pass the ball to his team-mate. Then it is normal to be angry with him.”

Bruno went on to explain two examples of heated moments with his teammates in United games.

In the 1-0 win over Leicester earlier this month, Fernandes shouted at  new signing Tyrell Malacia to get his head up and scan for passing options as he was open on the other side of the pitch.

“He was quite angry with me because I was talking to him. But he didn’t understand what I was saying,” Fernandes said.

The playmaker then said he explained to Malacia after the game that he wasn’t shouting “in a bad way”.

Another example came in the Europa League quarter-final against Copenhagen, when Fernandes bit back at Harry Maguire who had shouted at him for losing possession.

“I lost the ball and he shouted at me, ‘Bruno, hold the ball!’. I was tired and said, ‘Don’t shout!’ Fernandes recalled.

“In the first-half of extra time, I went up to him and said sorry for talking back.”
