July 21, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and Spain’s RC Celta de Vigo played to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly on Wednesday night at PayPal Park. San Jose’s starting XI featured four Homegrown players (Cowell, Tsakiris, Richmond, Walls), three of which are teenagers, and both of the team’s first-round selections in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft (Ågren, Bouda). Fifteen-year-old midfielder Cruz Medina, 17-year-old goalkeeper Emi Ochoa, and 19-year-old defender Casey Walls all made their Earthquakes debut.
Celta took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute when Iago Aspas converted a low penalty kick just beyond the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Matt Bersano. San Jose responded just three minutes later when an in-swinging corner kick from Jan Gregus was headed inside the far post by Marcos Lopez.
The Earthquakes will now return to MLS action against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, July 23. The match will kick off from Providence Park at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).
