DURHAM, N.C. – No. 7 seed Virginia Tech fell to No. 1 Duke, 1-0, in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium.
The Hokies finish the season at 14-6-3 – the most wins in a single season since 2015. It was also just the second time in program history Virginia Tech advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
How it Happened
Lauren Hargrove put on a clinic in the opening minutes to keep the Blue Devils off the board. In the 10th minute, Hargrove made a diving save to prevent a Duke shot to the top corner of the net.
The Hokies kept Duke scoreless until the 33rd minute when the Blue Devils’ Katie Groff chipped in a deflected shot to make it a 1-0 contest.
Duke continued to control possession to start the second half. The Hokies’ best chance came in the 55th minute when Natalie Mitchell found a great pass from Anna Weir just outside the 18, but her shot was saved.
Despite several other opportunities, the Hokies could not find the back of the net.
The Blue Devils’ one goal scored is the lowest in their NCAA Tournament run thus far.
