A Dutch journalist has told Man Utd their “humiliating slaughter” at the hands of Liverpool is a “blessing” as Erik ten Hag will now drop Antony.
The Brazil international has scored a couple of important goals for the Red Devils this season but ultimately his performances and contributions have been underwhelming.
Antony signed from Ajax in the summer transfer window in a deal which could reach around £85m but the winger has provided just six goals and no assists in 27 appearances in all competitions.
He has been criticised by a number of former players and pundits throughout the season for his work rate and failure to track back to help out his team-mates.
And now Voetbal International columnist Nico Dijkshoorn reckons Ten Hag should drop Antony for exactly four matches after they lost 7-0 to Liverpool on Sunday.
Dijkshoorn told Soccer News: “A good start: Antony should first be benched for four games and, from now on, forbid him to play a curling ball into the far corner with his left after cutting inside. In that sense, Liverpool’s humiliating slaughter is a blessing.
“Ten Hag will sense exactly that this is the right moment to sideline the next footballer with the Jesus disease for good.”
On Ten Hag’s impact this season, Dijkshoorn added: “Ten Hag has managed to convince his players and the Manchester United management that being ‘an institution’ is of no use.
“It’s about friendship. About making sense. Running your legs out of your backside for another person because the other person does the same for you.”
Dijkshoorn has had some harsh words to say about the Man Utd boss in the past with the Dutch journalist saying he is “deeply ashamed” of his comments with more than a hint of sarcasm.
He continued: “He’s an oddball. Too plain for Ajax and too plain for Manchester United. Too provincial. I too have made fun of Erik’s deadpan appearances several times on this site.
“Retrospectively, I am deeply ashamed of so little insight. I understand far too late that Ten Hag has been saving football from certain death in recent years.”
Roy Keane and numerous other pundits have torn into Man Utd for their shambolic second-half performance against Liverpool but the former midfielder also gave their arch-rivals credit.
