Tottenham manager Antonio Conte personally called Harry Kane to congratulate on becoming the club’s all-time top scorer after breaking a 43-year-old Jimmy Greaves record.
Kane had moved level with Greaves on 266 Spurs goals last month, before his early strike against Manchester City on Sunday took him onto 267 and also secured a vital 1-0 win.
Conte was unable to be at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having undergone successful gallbladder surgery a few days earlier and taking time out to recuperate. Assistant coach Cristian Stellini was charged with leading the team on the day instead.
Afterwards, Kane was filmed being handed a phone in the dressing room. Conte was on the other end of the line and could be heard saying, “You make me proud.”
The result took Spurs to within a single point of the Premier League top four, taking advantage of Newcastle drawing against West Ham and dropping points for the second league fixture in a row. Manchester United are only slightly further ahead, although Spurs have played a game more than both.
Conte later also congratulated the whole team for the City result on social media.
“Always with you, even from afar. Proud of the whole team,” he said.
Spurs will face Leicester and Chelsea in Premier League fixtures before the end of the month, as well as home and away legs in the Champions League last 16 against AC Milan.
