Manchester United finally pulled the trigger on Monday, dismissing manager Erik ten Hag after a torrid start to the 2024/25 season.
The Red Devils’ woes stretch back to last season under the former Ajax manager and there was an inevitability about his sacking. In fact, United already look to be closing in on the appointment of his successor – Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP.
As much as Ten Hag’s dismissal came as no surprise, United players have taken to social media to honour their former manager, who arrived at Old Trafford at the beginning of the 2022/23 season.
Club skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of the first to pay tribute to Ten Hag on Instagram. “Thanks for everything boss! I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best in the future,” said the Portuguese star.
“Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great from all of us I hope you fans can keep with you the good things the manager has done for our club!” he added.
Luke Shaw shared a similar sentiment, writing: “Days like today are not nice or easy, but I’m grateful for what we achieved together. I want to say thank you and wish you all the success for the future boss.”
Kobbie Mainoo enjoyed his breakthrough season under Ten Hag in 2023/24 and the teenager expressed his appreciation following Monday’s news.
“Thank you for your trust and belief in me and for giving me the opportunity to play for my boyhood club. I wish you all the best for the future,” he wrote on Instagram.
Lisandro Martinez was one of the former Ajax players Ten Hag signed during his time in Manchester, with the Argentine swift to thank the 54-year-old for the opportunity.
“Thanks for the trust you placed in me, coach,” said Martinez. “It’s not the ending we hoped for, and we’re really feeling it because responsibility is always shared. But we hold onto the great memories of Wembley and your passion for United. Good luck and every success in the future.”
Legendary United striker and Ten Hag’s assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the Red Devils until a permanent appointment is made.
Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City is United’s first match without Ten Hag in the dugout before Chelsea visit Old Trafford on Sunday.
