Although it took him a little while to get going on Tyneside, Alexander Isak is virtually undroppable for Newcastle these days, and everyone at the club will surely be delighted to understand that the £100m man sees his future at the club.

With Anthony Gordon having recently put pen to paper on a long-term deal, it appears that the Swede wants to follow suit, per iSport (subscription required), and commit himself to the Magpies beyond the end of his current deal which concludes in June 2028 (transfermarkt).

La Liga giants, Barcelona, have allegedly been plotting a move for the striker, and Arsenal are also believed to be interested, but Newcastle sporting director, Paul Mitchell, had already planned to tie Isak down to a new deal after signing off on Gordon’s contract.

It’s clear why the powers that be at St. James’ Park don’t want to let their competitors get their grubby paws on Isak either.

Pat Nevin once described him as “brilliant” on the Off The Ball podcast, whilst team-mate, Joe Willock, commented on one of Isak’s own Instagram posts and compared him to Thierry Henry.

He continues to be a talisman for Eddie Howe, and the Geordies have take him to their hearts despite him not being the traditional No.9 that they prefer in those parts.

Even if he isn’t a Shearer, McDonald or Milburn, he still knows where the net is and, ultimately, that’s what he’s paid for.

Thirty six goals in 73 games (transfermarkt) is an incredibly productive return, and after seemingly being able to hold onto their best players despite Financial Fair Play concerns, it bodes well for Newcastle’s immediate and long-term future.

Isak has yet to put pen to paper and all the while there are interested parties in the background there could be a worry that his head will be turned.

You can never say never in football of course, but it would be a huge surprise at this point if Newcastle weren’t able to get a contract extension over the line.
