Vincent Kompany has identified Barcelona centre-back Pau Cubarsi as a potential superstar of the future.
The Bayern Munich boss is preparing for perhaps the toughest test of his tenure so far as he prepares to take on an in-form Barcelona outfit overflowing with young talents like Cubarsi.
Widely recognised as one of the finest centre-backs of his generation, Kompany admitted he expects Cubarsi to receive similar praise down the line once his career reaches the next level.
“He’s one of the future defensive leaders in world football for sure,” Kompany said. “Not just playing for Barca, but against the level of opposition at his age is very special and very rare.
“I was lucky to be able to start my career very young, but not at this level. Not only because he is playing for Barca, but because he is in a team with a lot of quality. If he doesn’t have injuries, he will be a great player.”
Cubarsi was not the only player singled out for praise from Kompany, who also took the time to express his excitement towards Lamine Yamal’s potential.
“It’s exceptional for Barcelona that, after such a short time since the departure of [Lionel] Messi, who for many years was a key figure in world football, they already have another player who can replace him,” Kompany said of the young winger.
“It’s unique. All my respect for La Masia, who has always been able to trust in that type of player and give them a chance.
“It’s not just about stopping particular opponents, but about winning the game against Barca. Not just stopping one player, but the whole team, and that’s what we’re focusing on. But Lamine Yamal is impressive.”
