COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland men’s soccer alum and current Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen was named to the United States Men’s National Team roster for their upcoming friendlies against Panama and Mexico. The USMNT plays Panama on October 12 in Austin, Texas, and then face Mexico on October 15 in Zapopan, Mexico. Training camp for the national team will begin October 6.
Steffen’s last callup for the US men’s national team came back in March 2023. Steffen has made 29 appearances for the USMNT, making 16 starts and posting 10 clean sheets. Steffen has played in multiple tournaments with the USMNT, including the Concacaf Gold Cup, Concacaf Nations League and World Cup Qualifiers.
In his two years with the Terrapins, Steffen played and started in 48 matches with a record of 30-10-8. Steffen made 117 saves in goal, including 76 saves in 2013. Steffen had 17 shutouts in his career and was tabbed as the NCAA Championship Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2013.
After playing at Maryland, Steffen began his professional career at SC Freiburg. Steffen has played for clubs all over the world, including Manchester City, Fortuna Düsseldorf, and Middlesbrough. Steffen currently plays for the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Steffen has played in 36 games for the Rapids, and was named the League’s Cup Goalkeeper of the Tournament after helping lead the Rapids to a third-place finish in the competition.
