Scouting BYU
The BYU Cougars are currently sitting on a 3-4-2 record, 1-1 in conference play. The last time the Utes and Cougars met was Sept. 9 of the 2023 season at Ute Field, and the Cougars came out victorious 6-1. This is the first time the red and blue will meet for a conference game since 2010, when BYU won 2-1, and both schools were members of the Mountain West Conference.

A long-time rivalry, Utah and BYU have met on the pitch every year since the Utah women’s soccer program was founded, making this the 30th face off between the two Beehive State schools. Though this is not the first match up, it is the first time in five years the programs will meet and BYU will not be ranked.

Head coach Jennifer Rockwood has been with the program since the beginning, 2024 being her 30th season with the Cougars. Rockwood has led the team to 23 NCAA appearances and currently sits at 12th in the NCAA for all-time career victories.

Compared to opponents, the Cougars are sitting at 10-13 for goals and 107-127 for shots. But, their goalkeeper, Lynette Hernaez, has done her part with 43 saves to her opponents’ 34. Hernaez has spent every game in the net for the Cougs, totaling 800 minutes played this season. BYU lost their top scorer, Brecken Mozingo, but junior forward Allie Fryer has stepped into her shoes, tallying three goals already this season.

The Utes fell to the Red Raiders 2-0 at Texas Tech on Sept. 19. This is their first loss on the road and first loss against a Big 12 opponent. This was the first meeting between Utah and the defending Big 12 champions since 2016 and the first half was a focus on defense for both teams. Coming out of halftime, each team had multiple crossbar shots, but Tech was able to squeeze two goals in the 70th and 73rd minute.

Wardle the Warrior
