Dores Look Ahead to Thursday – Vanderbilt University Athletics – Official Athletics Website

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt soccer returns to the pitch on Thursday night, hosting Kansas for the second matchup in program history. The match will start at 7 p.m. and air on SEC Network+.

Vanderbilt (3-0-1) is coming off its third shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory over Columbia on Friday night. Courtney Jones registered two goals, both outside the 18-yard box. In the 37th minute, Jones’ free kick from 25 yards out sailed over the wall and beat an outstretched goalkeeper inside the right post to put the Dores up 2-0 just before halftime. In the 56th minute, she struck again from 30 yards, this time just inside the left post below the crossbar, to put the Commodores up by their final margin of 3-0. Caroline Betts broke open the scoring for Vandy after a setup from Sydney Watts.

Kansas (2-1-2) is coming off a 1-0 loss to Gonzaga on Sunday. The Jayhawks held a 19-4 edge in shots, including 5-3 in shots on goal and had a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks but failed to find the back of the net. Head coach Nate Lei is in his first season at the helm of the Jayhawks.

Thursday’s matchup will be the second of its kind, including a matchup between sisters Lexi and Sydney Watts. Lexi, a junior forward for Kansas, has appeared in every game this season and tallied one assist. Sydney, a sophomore forward for Vanderbilt, has also appeared in every match this season for the Commodores and leads the team with seven points off three goals and one assist.

Last season, the two teams met in Lawrence, Kan., resulting in a 1-1 draw. Addie Porter found the back of the net in the 89th minute when Jones took her defender one-on-one, drawing her wide to allow room for Porter in the box. Jones crossed with her left foot and Porter connected for the tying header.
