Late Goal Lifts Bears Over Titans 1-0

BERKELEY- Junior midfielder Alex Klos of the California women’s soccer team scored her second game winner in as many matches to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton Thursday night at Edwards Stadium.
 
With its first shutout of the season and second straight win Cal improved to 3-1-1 while the Titans dropped to 2-2-0.
 
The reigning regular season champions of the Big West Conference came ready to play, winning the first-half possession battle in what was a gritty, physical contest. Cal managed to get eight shots off in the period, with three landing on frame, but Titans goalkeeper Ranson (2-2-0) kept a clean sheet. Bears keeper Kelly McManus (2-0-1) matched Ranson’s efforts with a pair of saves of her own in the scoreless half.
 
After the break, the Cal offense returned to the pitch with the same aggressiveness taking nine shots, seven of which were on goal. Despite the Titans defense not breaking, the Bears kept the pressure on and finally broke through in the 80th minute. Senior forward Velize King set the play in motion with a key takeaway in the middle third that started the counterattack. After driving all the way up the sideline and into the 18-yard box, King was finally met by the Titan defense and the ball was spit out to Klos who curled it in with her left foot to give the Bears the 1-0 lead.
