Duke’s Bjornsson, Syracuse’s Hut Earn ACC Men’s Soccer Player of Week Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke sophomore forward Ulfur Bjornsson was named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the 2024 season, while Syracuse senior goalkeeper Tomas Hut was tabbed ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Bjornsson had a nine-point weekend in San Diego, scoring four goals and adding an assist, as the Blue Devils finished their West Coast swing 1-0-1. On Thursday evening against San Diego, Bjornsson gave Duke a 2-1 advantage midway through the second half, after assisting on Jose Ortega’s first career goal. Duke went on to draw San Diego, 2-2. A native of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Bjornsson followed it up Sunday with his second career hat trick in the Blue Devils’ 3-2 win at UC San Diego. He opened the scoring in the 18th minute, before following with a bicycle kick for his second and adding a tap-in rebound for his third. Bjornsson is tied for the national lead in goals with Wisconsin’s Dean Boltz, with four goals.

Hut made his debut for Syracuse last weekend, recording a pair of clean sheets in Syracuse’s wins over Colgate and Niagara. In the season-opening 1-0 road win at Colgate, Hut made four saves in the game, including back-to-back stops at the end of the first half to keep the Raiders from taking the lead heading into the break. A native of Nutley, New Jersey, Hut remained in goal Sunday as the Orange defeated Niagara, 3-0. The goalkeeper made a save on the lone shot on goal that he faced.

ACC men’s soccer features a busy Labor Day weekend beginning Thursday, Aug. 29, with 24 non-conference matches on the schedule. League play begins Friday, Sept. 6.
