The positivity surrounding Manchester United this summer came to an abrupt end on Saturday as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion.
Joao Pedro’s 95th-minute header did the damage, turning what was an otherwise uninspiring day into a truly disappointing one as United’s issues with conceding late goals continued.
Here are United’s best and worst players from the game according to 90min‘s player ratings.
Noussair Mazraoui – 7/10
The fanfare around his arrival may have been subdued in comparison to Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt, but Noussair Mazraoui made a significant impression on his new fans here.
He dealt with Kaoru Mitoma very well at the back and even got forwards to add the assist for Amad’s opener.
Honourable mention
Alejandro Garnacho – 7/10
Alejandro Garnacho was only on the pitch for 25 minutes but quickly reminded everyone why he’s United’s danger man.
Some lively dribbling caused all sorts of problems for Brighton and Garnacho was unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet, instead seeing his effort chalked off for an unfortunate Joshua Zirkzee offside.
Marcus Rashford – 4/10
A frustrating showing from Marcus Rashford, who never managed to get himself into this one.
Rashford completed just one of three dribbles and failed to create any chances during his 65 minutes on the pitch, and it came as no surprise to see United’s attack improve once he had been replaced by Garnacho.
Dishonourable mention
Harry Maguire – 5/10
Few in United’s defence covered themselves in glory here, with both goals highlighting some major flaws at the back.
For Maguire, he failed to deal with the danger that eventually ended in Brighton’s opener, leaving many fans calling for Matthijs de Ligt to be given his starting spot next time out.
