USWNT, Kilgore Win Olympic Gold Medal

PARIS, France – The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) won its first Olympic gold medal in 12 years on Saturday with the assistance of Arizona Soccer alumna and current USWNT Assistant Coach Twila Kilgore (Kaufman). It marked the fifth time that the US women have won gold at the Olympics.

The US won six matches on its way to the top of the podium, defeating Zambia, Germany and Australia in group play before facing Japan in the quarterfinals. Its quarterfinal match against Japan and its semifinal contest against Germany both went to extra time, but the US came away with 1-0 victories in each. The squad secured the gold medal with a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the final.

Kilgore represented Arizona from 1998-2001, starting in 72 matches. In 1998 she was Arizona’s Rookie of the Year after netting four goals. Her coaching history includes stints with the Houston Dash, Pepperdine and UC Davis. She is the first American-born woman to earn U.S. Soccer’s Pro Coaching License.
