Wyatt Meyer, an all-star on the field and in the classroom, earned notice from the United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday.
Wyatt Meyer – a senior back for his final season with the California men’s soccer team – was among 16 defenders named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Players to Watch List, the national soccer coaching organization announced Tuesday.
The 6-foot-2 central defender and defensive central midfielder collected a bevy of accolades for the 2023 season – he was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to the All-Pac-12 First Team, United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region Second Team and College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Team. The Berkeley native led a Cal squad that produced a 1.06 team goals-against average, which was the Golden Bears’ best defensive performance since 2013 (0.97 GAA). Meyer was also a contributor to the attack, scoring his first goal since 2021 in the season finale at Stanford and posting two assists.
Arguably his highlight of the year came in December, when he was chosen by Nashville FC in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft. Meyer and Kevin Carmichael, his partner in Cal’s central defense who was also drafted by Nashville, will play for the Bears in the fall before joining MLS.
Cal’s preseason begins at Edwards Stadium on Sunday, when the Bears host UC Davis in an exhibition game at 1 p.m. PT.
