The California men’s soccer team was one of 176 men’s programs across all divisions to earn a United Soccer Coaches College Team Academic Award for the 2023-24 academic year, the college game’s governing body announced Thursday.

To claim the honor, a team must compile a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. The Golden Bears posted a GPA of 3.26.

Head coach Leonard Griffin‘s squad garnered its share of academic accolades for last season – Wyatt Meyer was named a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American, Meyer and Santiago Hopkins shared CSC Academic All-District honors, and nine Bears (Hopkins, Meyer, Federico Barbieri, Marco Brougher, Kai Djerbaka, Jake Himelstein, Allan Juarez, Oskar Logevall and Cameron Robie) were named to the Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll. Robie also collected the Golden Bear Achievement Award for posting the top individual GPA on the team.

Griffin, in his third year in charge of the Bears, leads Cal into its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024. The regular season begins when Cal hosts Denver in an Aug. 22 nonconference game at Edwards Stadium. Prior to the opener, the Bears host a preseason game against UC Davis on Aug. 11 and close the preseason with an Aug. 16 match at San Francisco.
