Ivan Toney admits frustration over limited England role at Euro 2024

Ivan Toney has confessed to being “annoyed” by his late appearance in England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia at Euro 2024.

Having been an unused substitute in England’s first three group games, Toney came off the bench in the fourth minute of stoppage time against Slovakia when the Three Lions were still 1-0 down – a call which manager Gareth Southgate admitted left the Brentford striker “disgusted”.

Jude Bellingham’s late overhead kick would take the game to extra-time, where Toney ended up setting up Harry Kane’s dramatic winner to steer England to the quarter-finals.

“I think my face said it all!” Toney told the media when asked whether Southgate was write to say he was unhappy. “The manager has been there before. I’m sure there’s been a time there before when he’s come on in the 97th-plus minute and you just want to be on earlier.

“Everything is sorted now, we’re friends – not like we weren’t friends – but we’re happy now and concentrating on the next game.

“There’s a guy called Michael Caulfield at Brentford, who is always talking about controlling your emotions, and I feel like in that moment it was time to control your emotions. Yes, I was annoyed but still 30 minutes to play, and you’ve got to come out of that mood and focus.

“I feel like, people call them substitutes, others finishers. I think you have to be ready and there’s more than 11 players needed to win a tournament.”

Toney insisted England’s uncomfortable start to Euro 2024 is nothing to worry about and urged critics of the team to reunite and support the Three Lions on their push towards the final.

“There’s always going to be expectations and a lot of people who have their opinion,” he said. “They’re entitled to it. If we win 2-0, people will say it should have been three or four. That’s always the case. But we’re two games away from a major final and we have to do what we can do and hopefully it’ll be enough.”
