Red Devils identify Jarrad Branthwaite alternative

Exclusive: Fabrizio Romano on Man United and Tottenham interest in centre-back transfer

Manchester United have reportedly decided to target a move for Bayern Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba if they are unable to complete the signing of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

According to Manchester Evening News, Branthwaite is Man United’s top target for the summer transfer window but they will not pay over the odds for the England international.

Everton are seeking between £70million and £80million for the talented young defender, who impressed several clubs in his breakthrough season at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are looking for more money as they have to comply with Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and Branthwaite’s big money sale is going to help them with their finances.

In case a deal for the Everton defender proves to be difficult, Man United have identified alternative targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils need a new defender as they struggled last season and conceded 58 goals in the Premier League campaign.

The departure of experienced defender Raphael Varane upon the expiry of his contract has increased the need of a new defender at Old Trafford.

Edmond Tapsoba is being considered by Man United.

The Red Devils have paid over the odds for players in the past but they are now ready to change this habit under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Man United should be clever in the transfer market as they have spent hefty amounts on players like Antony, Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and many others in the past and the moves have not worked out well.

Man United will be busy in the transfer window

Before making new signings, the club will be focusing on making sales and getting rid of the deadwood in the squad and cut down the wage bill.

Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Casemiro and a few others are expected to leave Old Trafford this summer in a major overhaul of the squad.

After finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, they would be hoping to avoid a similar season by making new signings.
