Manchester City could lose one of their star players this summer, as goalkeeper Ederson considers a move away from the club.
The Brazilian shot stopper proved vital once more in City’s title charge, making 43 appearances across all competitions and keeping 10 Premier League clean sheets during 2023/24.
Ederson received a nasty blow to the face during City’s recent clash with Tottenham, during which he suffered a fracture to his eye socket and was replaced by Stefan Ortega. The injury ruled him out of the club’s final league game of the season against West Ham United, after which they were able to lift the trophy, as well as the upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester United.
Ederson was visibly annoyed leaving the pitch against Spurs, protesting he was able to continue.
Now, it looks as if he may be searching for an exit from the Etihad Stadium altogether, with Fabrizio Romano reporting the player’s interest to explore other options.
A move for Ederson would come as a blow for City, who are currently enjoying a period of dominance in English football. Pep Guardiola’s squad lifted an unprecedented fourth successive league trophy on Sunday, robbing Arsenal of their chance to end a 20-year silverware drought.
Romanots states there is already interest from the Saudi Pro League, but the final decision will be in the hands of Ederson himself.
The 30-year-old moved to City from Benfica in 2017 in a deal worth £35m. At the time he was relatively unknown outside Portugal but has played a huge part of City’s recent success. His current contract is set to expire in 2026, after signing an extension in 2021.
Ortega has consistently proven his ability to deputise for Ederson, but he may be required to do so on a more permanent basis if the first-choice goalkeeper is to leave.
