January 18, 2024 – Canadian Premier League (CPL) – York United FC News Release
York United FC’s bitter local rivalry will continue early in the 2024 Canadian Premier League campaign, with The Nine Stripes’ home opener seeing them pitted against reigning champions Forge FC.
The teams will do battle on Sunday, April 21 at York Lions Stadium. Kick-off is set for 4pm.
Ever since crossing paths for the first time in the CPL’s historic opening fixture in 2019, an intense rivalry has developed between the sides and a litany of standout moments have taken place. Last time out, six goals were shared in an epic 3-3 draw, while midfielder Brem Soumaoro conjured a spectacular, last-gasp winner for Martin Nash’s side last June.
In total, there have been 21 fixtures between the clubs and – in true derby style – one goal has separated them in eight of those games.
Having made the playoffs with some crucial end-of-season form in 2023, The Nine Stripes are looking to build on that momentum for the forthcoming campaign. There is certainly renewed energy and purpose following the takeover by Mexican company Game Plan Sports Group and a formal unveiling of Eduardo, Ricardo and Miguel – the three brothers responsible for overseeing the new era.
Meanwhile, former LigaMX goalkeeper Jorge Villalpando has subsequently been announced as The Nine Stripes’ new Technical/Sporting Director.
The club has been busy in the off-season, with the arrivals of Dennis Salanovic and senior Canadian international Juan Cordova. More signings are expected to be announced imminently.
The full 2024 schedule, presented by WestJet, will be unveiled on Tuesday, January 23. As part of that announcement, the CPL’s Official Airline and Vacation Partner, who have renewed their partnership with the league through 2027, will also issue an exclusive offer for travelling supporters. WestJet is continuing its commitment to bringing soccer fans across the country closer to the game with this limited time offer, making it easier for York United FC supporters to take their passion on the road and proudly cheer on The Nine Stripes this year.
