December 24, 2023 – United Soccer League Championship (USL) – New Mexico United News Release
Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico United is thrilled to announce the return of the greatest goalkeeper in club history, Alex Tambakis. The Greek keeper returns for his fifth season with the club – hoping to build on his club records in wins (34), saves (231), clean sheets (18), and goals against average (1.32).
“Alex’s leadership, poise under pressure, and terrific ability have been on display for the last three seasons for our club,” said United Sporting Director Itamar Keinan. “He is one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the USL Championship, and we’re thrilled to bring him back for a fourth season in Black & Yellow.”
In addition to his numerous club records, Tambakis nears the top of the charts in all-time USL Championship categories, as well. Specifically, his 537 career USL Championship saves and 44 career clean sheets leave him second, all-time, trailing just the retired Evan Newton in both categories (573 saves, 58 clean sheets.)
