The New York Red Bulls are working on bringing RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg to MLS in the January transfer window. 

Sources within the team tell MailSport that the Swede is looking to make a move stateside and both clubs are working now to finalize the deal.

The 32-year-old has played in 15 matches for Marco Rose’s side and has managed two goals in all competitions this season.

He joined Leipzig from Swedish giants Malmo in the 2014-15 season and went on to build a career for himself with the East Germany-based club.

Forsberg is Leipzig’s all-time leader for assists with 67, he’s second on the club’s all-time appearance list with 318 games under his belt for Die Roten Bullen and his 69 goals is fifth all time for the team.

He has played 39 games in the Champions League for Leipzig and helped the club win back-to-back DFB Pokal titles in 2022 and 2023.

Forsberg’s has also been a staple of the Sweden national team – getting called in for the World Cup in 2018 and the Euros in 2016 and 2021.

It was at the World Cup in Russia that Forsberg scored a game-winning goal against Switzerland that saw the Blågult advance to the quarterfinals. There, the team’s run would end with a 2-0 loss to England.

At the Euros three summers later, Forsberg broke Sweden’s all-time goal scoring record at the tournament – bagging four goals as his home country fell to Ukraine in the Round of 16 in extra time.

Those four goals put him as the joint-third highest scorer. He was behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrick Schick for the top spot as they both scored five times. Forsberg’s four goals tied him with Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku, and Karim Benzema.

In total, Forsberg has 20 goals in 84 appearances for Sweden.

He now joins a New York Red Bulls side that scored the fourth-least goals in Major League Soccer this past season.

The team experienced a loss of multiple attacking weapons this season for a myriad of reasons.
