11th-Ranked Pitt Women’s Soccer Earns No. 7 Seed in 2023 NCAA Tournament


PITTSBURGH – The No. 11-ranked Pitt women’s soccer team (14-5-1, 6-2-1 ACC) earned a back-to-back selection to the NCAA Tournament field, Monday evening. The No. 7 nationally seeded Panthers will host Ohio State (9-7-2, 5-4-1 BIG 10) in the 2023 NCAA Championship First Round Saturday at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. Tickets are on sale now and available for purchase HERE.

The Panthers qualified for the NCAA Tournament field as one of the 33 at-large bids. This is the second time in program history that Pitt will make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers will meet the Ohio State Buckeyes for the fifth time in program history with the Buckeyes holding the 3-1 edge. The two programs have not met in ten years with their last matchup in August of 2013. 

Pitt set program records for ACC wins during the 2023 regular season and qualified for the ACC Championship Semifinals for the first time in program history. The Panthers defeated North Carolina for the first time in program history, 2-1, on Sunday in the 2023 Ally ACC Championship First Round – advancing to the semifinals. On Thursday evening, Pitt met No. 1-ranked Florida State in the semifinals where there ACC Championship Road ended in a 2-0 loss to the Seminoles. The team continues to break records this season in points (157), goals (51), assists (55), corner kicks (175), and most home wins in a single season with eight after going undefeated (8-0-1) at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Panthers also made history placing five athletes on All-ACC Teams: Sarah Schupanksy (All-ACC First Team), Amanda West (All-ACC Second Team), Landy Mertz (All-ACC Third Team), Samiah Phiri (All-ACC Third Team), and Deborah Abiodun (All-ACC Third Team and Freshman Team). Schupansky is the first Panther to earn First Team honors in Pitt’s history. West and Mertz also earned a spot on the All-ACC Tournament Team for their efforts.

The Second Round of the 2023 NCAA Championships will be played Friday, Nov. 17 at non-predetermined campus sites and Third Round matchups will take place on Sunday, Nov. 19 at the same campus sites. Quarterfinals are set for Nov. 24 and 25, also on non-predetermined campus sites.
