Atlético Ottawa started a two-week road trip away from the nation’s capital with an inaugural clash against expansion side Vancouver FC. Ottawa’s form on the road was the best in the Canadian Premier League last season and was ruthlessly put on display as they comfortably beat Afshin Ghotbi’s side 5-0.
KEY MOMENTS
A rampant Atlético Ottawa put five (5) past Vanoucver FC as Head Coach Carlos González’s side was rewarded with the result some of their early performances deserved.
Ollie Bassett’s 8th-minute strike gave Ottawa the lead, the first time this season they have opened the score – assisted by Gianni dos Santos.
Jean-Aniel Assi was dangerous down the left flank throughout the first period and set up Samuel Salter for the 22-year-old’s first goal for Atlético Ottawa as the striker doubled the visitors’ lead in the 36th minute.
Noah Verhoeven also scored his first goal for the club, finishing off a counter-attacking move and assisted by Bassett, before second-half substitutes, Zach Verhoven and Zakaria Bahous got in on the act.
Atlético’s victory in Langley, BC, is the club’s largest margin of victory in history.
The fourteen (14) goals scored across three games in the CPL on Saturday was a record number for the league, equalling the previous highest tally registered in 2021.
This win has propelled Atlético from 8th to 4th in the CPL.
Bassett put on a dazzling display in the centre of the park, scoring one and assisting another goal whilst playing a crucial part in Ottawa’s ability to control the game.
The British midfielder created more chances (3), had more dribbles (4), successful dribbles (3) and interceptions (2) than any other player on the Atlético team.
Atlético continues its back-to-back away matches in the Canadian Premier League with a visit to Spruce Meadows to face Cavalry FC the next weekend.
González’s side returned to Ottawa on May 27, 2023, in a rematch of the 2023 playoff final against Forge FC.
