Paul Scholes has blamed a pair of Jadon Sancho’s Manchester United teammates for the winger’s patchy form since his arrival at Old Trafford.
Sancho arrived at United in the summer for £73m but has failed to put a consistent run of performances together for the Red Devils.
Erik ten Hag deemed the England international not ready physically or mentally ready to play for part of this season, and he’s been out of the first team fold for much of the campaign.
And despite returning to action recently, and bagging goals against Leeds and Leicester, Scholes believes there’s much more to come from the 22-year-old.
The United legend suggests his former club would see something similar to the Sancho from Borussia Dortmund if he had a “better right-back” alongside him, with current options Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka clearly not up to scratch in his eyes.
Asked if Sancho had contributed enough to United’s efforts this season, Scholes told BT Sport: “Not yet I don’t think, I still think there’s a lot more to come from him, he obviously had his issues and problems that the manager dealt with, he came back and scored a couple of goals.
“I still think there’s a player in there, he just needs the right players around him.
“Remember at Dortmund before, he had a flying right-back going on all the time, which really helped him because he’s not a quick player, he’s more of a skilful player who wants to play football, he wants to play with his centre-forward and right-back.
“If United can possibly find a better right-back it might make him a different proposition.”
Last week, Rio Ferdinand urged Sancho and teammate Antony to take more risks when on the ball for United.
“There’s one part of Antony and Jadon Sancho’s game that I think needs to improve, and that’s taking more risks.
“You don’t get anything in this game without taking risks. You don’t have success without taking risks, you don’t win trophies without taking risks.
“Alex Ferguson used to say to us all the time that he doesn’t want safe from forwards. That’s what I love about Bruno Fernandes, by the way.
“‘He just needs some weapons in front of him. If he’s got people in front of him making runs and taking risks, he’s a problem for any team.”
