Klopp accused of being ‘too loyal’ to Liverpool players as Guardiola comparison is made

Madrid, Spain. 15th Mar, 2023. UEFA Champions League round of sixteen second leg match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium: Real Madrid vs Liverpool, Madrid. Wednesday March 15, 2023

Jurgen Klopp was accused of being too loyal to some of his players in the aftermath of Liverpool crashing out of the Champions League.

There’s no denying that Liverpool have underperformed this season, despite a handful of brilliant performances.

Real Madrid got the better of them in the Champions League and they will now switch their attention to the top four race.

As things stand, Klopp’s side are sixth in the table and are six points behind Tottenham, but they do have a game in hand.

A major summer rebuild is expected for Liverpool in the summer, particularly when it comes to their midfield.

Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam thinks that Klopp has been too loyal to some of his players this season and that he could learn a thing or two from Pep Guardiola.

“I think Jurgen Klopp has been a little too loyal to these players, especially when you look at what Pep Guardiola has done with the likes of Joao Cancelo and moving players on to bring others in,” Adam told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“But I think as a manager you also have to respect what the players have done for you and those are decisions that have to be made by the staff.”

Big changes are expected at Liverpool this summer though as several first team players could be shown the door.

Roberto Firmino’s exit at the end of the season has already been confirmed and several other players look likely to follow him out.

Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that he expects midfield duo Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave at the end of the season.

‘Liverpool are informed on Mason Mount’s situation, but his talks with Chelsea have not 100% collapsed yet. Other clubs are also monitoring Mount’s future in case he’ll be allowed to leave in the summer,’ Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

‘I expect both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to follow Roberto Firmino and leave Liverpool on a free transfer this summer.

‘James Milner will decide in the next months, he will speak to Jurgen Klopp too. For all the other players, it will be decided in May/June ahead of the transfer window. Firmino, Keita and Oxlade will explore options soon but nothing is decided yet.’

Klopp also has his eye on several additions ahead of the summer, but whether they qualify for the Champions League could prove to be the difference in landing their primary targets.
