March 15, 2023 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Austin FC News Release
Austin, TEXAS – Austin FC defeated Violette AC 2-0 on Saturday night at Q2 Stadium, but were eliminated from the Concacaf Champions League with a 3-2 aggregate loss in the Round of 16 tie.
Austin dominated the possession and the chances throughout the first half but were unable to find a goal before the break. Sebastián Driussi put the ball in the back of the net in the 25th-minute, but VAR ruled the goal out for a handball in the buildup.
Driussi eventually broke the deadlock in the 51st-minute, finishing with a well-hit volley off a cross from Emiliano Rigoni. The Argentine doubled Austin’s tally 12 minutes later, heading in a pass from Alex Ring.
The Verde & Black were then denied what looked to be a certain penalty kick for a foul on Gyasi Zardes, despite a lengthy VAR review. The hosts continued to pile the pressure on Violette late, but were ultimately unable to find the goal that would have leveled the tie on aggregate.
