Manchester United are reportedly ‘reluctant’ to attempt to sign Harry Kane, as Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s style of negotiating could hinder the move.
United both need and want a new striker in the summer. Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract being mutually cancelled left them with just two senior striking options.
However, Anthony Martial’s proneness to injury would have meant Marcus Rashford was the only option if they hadn’t recruited in January. With Rashford preferring to play off the left, it’s a good job they did.
Indeed, Wout Weghorst was pulled from a loan at Besiktas by parent club Burnley in order to join United.
However, that loan move seems nothing more than a stopgap. While he has been praised for some aspects of his game, the likes of Gary Neville have criticised him, suggesting he “wouldn’t be available” in January if he were a better player.
Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic and Kane are among the options it seems United would like to pursue. They have identified issues with some of those deals, though.
Florian Plettenburg recently revealed United are ‘not seriously considering’ Kane as he’d be ‘too expensive’ for his age (29).
That pursuing a deal for Kane might be problematic, despite United’s interest, has been reinforced by journalist Mark Ogden.
“Man United have been linked with Kane because they’ve made signing a centre-forward a priority,” he told ESPN.
“But I’ve been told that while United are big admirers of Kane there’s a real reluctance to go in because of the situation they face at Tottenham in dealing with Daniel Levy.”
Indeed, the Tottenham chairman has previous for forcing sides to pay top dollar when maybe they didn’t want to. As such, United seemingly feel they might be better off not getting into negotiations at all.
“We know that Levy has a reputation as one of the toughest negotiators in football. In the past he’s forced United to pay £30m+ for Dimitar Berbatov, he got a world-record fee for Gareth Bale and he stopped Kane from joining Man City when he made it quite clear he wanted to leave,” ogden added.
“From United’s perspective, I’ve been told they’re really reluctant to go for Kane in the sense that they feel Levy will make them wait until the end of the window.”
The Red Devils have also reportedly got reservations about Vlahovic, who they feel might not ‘justify a high outlay’. Osimhen might be the best option for them to explore, so they’ll hope…
