March 14, 2023 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL – At its season kick-off event presented by BMO, CF Montréal announced Tuesday night that midfielder Samuel Piette will serve as the Club’s first team captain in 2023.
Victor Wanyama and Kamal Miller will continue to act as assistant co-captains.
“I am immensely proud of this title as it shows I have the confidence of the Club, the head coach and the players,” said Samuel Piette. “I want to continue to fulfill this role to the best of my ability to continue to push this team in the right direction, achieve new goals and continue to make fans proud of our team.”
“Samuel is a positive leader and an example to follow both on and off the field,” mentioned head coach Hernán Losada. “He is the player who has the most minutes with the Club now, which shows his loyalty and commitment to the organization. He is a disciplined player who leads by example and communicates very well with the whole group in several languages, which allows for a good atmosphere in the locker room.”
Piette, 28, has played the past seven seasons in Montreal, totalling 11,487 minutes in 145 MLS matches including 129 starts, two goals and 10 assists. During Montreal’s historic 2022 campaign, Piette played 26 games and 1,487 minutes, posting a 90% passing percentage, an MLS career-best for the player.
On March 4th against Austin FC, Piette became the Club’s all-time leader in minutes in MLS regular season play with 11,487, overtaking Nacho Piatti (11,427). The veteran is also closing in on the record for most regular season starts. Piette currently ranks second with 129 starts, while Piatti also sits atop that category with 130. Lastly, with 145 regular season games played in MLS, he is only six games shy of the team record held by Patrice Bernier (151).
The Quebec native helped the Club win its fourth and fifth Canadian Championship titles in 2019 and 2021. He also featured in all four of the Club’s matches during the 2020 Concacaf Champions League run against Deportivo Saprissa and CD Olimpia.
On the international stage, Piette has earned 66 caps with the Canadian men’s national team since making his debut in 2012 at the age of 17. Most notably, he was selected as part of John Herdman’s final roster to represent Canada last November at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
