Former Liverpool star thinks Klopp is using one of his players in the wrong position

Former Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing believes that Jurgen Klopp has used Harvey Elliott out of his natural position this season.

It’s no secret that Liverpool are eyeing up a midfield overhaul in the summer and players like Elliott have had to fill in this year.

Elliott has started in 16 league matches this season and has made a further 10 appearances from the bench.

The 19-year-old started against Bournemouth in midfield, but he struggled to make an impact as Liverpool lost the game 1-0.

While he has done a job as part of a midfield three, Downing thinks that he would be better suited to a position further up the pitch.

“You think of Harvey Elliot, I don’t think he’s a natural midfield player,” Downing explained on the BBC Football Daily podcast.

“I think he (is best) playing off the right. But he’s going to have a job moving Salah out the way.

“I looked at Liverpool’s midfield (vs Bournemouth). They need bodies, I don’t think it will just be Jude Bellingham (they are targeting). It will be another one or two.

“Thiago’s got injury problems. Fabinho’s form has been up and down. You can’t rely on Bajcetic to play every game at 18, as good as he’s been.”

As Mohamed Salah occupies the position on the right-hand side for Liverpool, Elliott has had to make do with a role in the midfield.

Liverpool are expected to have a summer rebuild in the summer which would perhaps see Elliott afforded more opportunities as a winger.

Jude Bellingham continues to be a player of interest for Klopp and Liverpool along with several other top sides from around Europe.

Klopp’s side currently sit sixth in the Premier League and are six points behind Tottenham, although they do have a game in hand.

Whether Liverpool manages to qualify for the Champions League next season could have a large implication on the players they are able to sign.

Next up for Klopp’s side is a trip to Real Madrid in midweek where they will be looking to overturn 5-2 defeat from the first leg.
