Top Tottenham target to replace Conte revealed

Tottenham target Ruben Amorim shouts instructions at his players

Tottenham have made Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim their top target if Antonio Conte leaves the club, according to reports.

Spurs managed to f**k up their chances of silverware this season in a seven-day period between March 2nd and 9th as a defeat against Sheffield United and a draw at home to AC Milan saw them knocked out of both the FA Cup and Champions League.

The performances in those two matches were just as concerning for Tottenham fans as the results themselves with a Premier League defeat to Wolves sandwiched in between leaving their chances of a top-four finish in the balance.

They did manage to bounce back with a 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest yesterday and Liverpool’s loss to Bournemouth now means Conte’s side have a six-point cushion – but the Reds have a game in hand.

There have been no reports that Conte will be sacked this season but the Italian’s contract runs out in the summer and there have been claims that Tottenham have decided not to renew it.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel – who was sacked by Chelsea earlier this season – have been linked with the job if Conte goes.

But, according to Correio da Manhã (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are hoping to convince Amorim to leave Sporting Lisbon for north London with Spurs ‘at the head’ of clubs interested in the Portuguese coach.

The Portuguese publication adds that Premier League sides are ‘targeting’ the former Braga boss, while he has also been put back on Paris Saint-Germain’s ‘list of preferences’ to replace Christophe Galtier.

But Tottenham or any other suitor will have to pay Sporting Lisbon €20m (£18m) to get Amorim released from his contract at the Liga Portugal club.

Eric Dier is still hoping Tottenham can turn their season around under Conte by finishing in the top four come the end of the season.

“Obviously missing that last game (through suspension) definitely hurt,” Dier told SpursPlay.

“Those are the types of games you want to play in, but that’s football. It was nice for us to get back out there with a win and hopefully we can move on from here.

“We have to take the experience from last season and use it to our advantage.

“You know what the Premier League is like, they’ll be bumps along the way but we’ve got to try and give everything for these 11 games. We’ve got to try and give everything as a squad and as a club.

“Yeah, obviously Wednesday (against AC Milan) was a huge disappointment…
