Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Matt Doherty has had his ‘contract mutually terminated’ and he has since signed for Atletico Madrid.
A Spurs statement said: “We have mutually agreed to the termination of Matt Doherty’s contract to enable him to join another club.
“We should like to thank Matt for his service and wish him well for the future.”
Doherty’s departure was set to be a loan – with Atletico Madrid his potential destination – but that would have taken Tottenham up to nine players out on loan and FIFA’s limit is eight.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano initially tweeted that Doherty’s move to Atletico will be a “straight loan”. He deleted that tweet after Spurs announced that he has in fact left the club permanently.
The Republic of Ireland full-back made 71 appearances for Spurs after joining from Wolves in August 2020.
Atletico Madrid soon confirmed Doherty’s move to the Spanish capital.
“Matt Doherty is a new Red & White player!” the La Liga club tweeted.
“The Irish international joins our club for the rest of the season.”
Earlier in the day, Djed Spence completed his loan move from Tottenham Hotspur to Ligue 1 side Rennes. He has barely featured for the Londoners since joining them in the summer from Middlesbrough.
Antonio Conte has made it clear that he is not a huge fan of his current crop of right-backs. These two exits leave him with just Emerson Royal to choose from, but they are finally set to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon for around £39m.
The deal for Porro looked to be off earlier this week but Tottenham were able to ‘resolve the issues’ with Sporting Lisbon to make the deal possible again.
Ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has been left baffled by Tottenham’s decision to sign Spence. He has compared the youngster to Gareth Bale as it took both players a “while to settle in” at the London outfit.
“I don’t understand the dynamic of that [summer] transfer. I know that Gareth Bale took a while to settle into Tottenham Hotspur and was never played by Harry Redknapp until the vision sort of arrived,” Jordan said.
“But this boy was fought for – he could have gone to Nottingham Forest; he could’ve stayed where he was actually successful. He’s gone to Spurs, and I don’t know what the purpose of that £13-14m transfer currently was.”
