Spence was an integral part of Nottingham Forest’s promotion push last season while on loan at Steve Cooper’s side, but has struggled to kick on at Spurs.
After arriving for £20 million over the summer, he has played just six matches across all competitions for Antonio Conte‘s team.
Spence would likely have fallen further down the pecking order had he stayed, with Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Porro expected to join Spurs on deadline day.
Despite his disappointing start to life at the club, the promising full-back may yet have a chance to redeem himself as his loan move does not include an option to buy.

He will join a side in a similar league position to Tottenham, as Rennes sit 5th in Ligue 1 and ten points off league leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Joe Rodon, who is also on loan from the North London club, has been a regular in the Rennes defence this season
Spurs are set to lose another right back on deadline day as Matt Doherty is on the verge of a loan deal with Atletico Madrid.
